Musicals Review:

Wicked
To class a musical as the best thing since Les Miserables is quite a statement but i have to say... I'd go and see it again in a flash and i plan to in the new year! The impressive machanical dragon hanging above the stage, that greets you into the theatre itself sets the scene for a fantastic adventure of wizardry! The prodution itself is amazing to watch... if anything.. there was too much to watch which is why i need to go back as soon as possible to see it again! Idina Menzal was fantastic... her stage presence is perfect to take on the leading role from her broadway performance as 'Elpheda' and her voice was truly amazing. I left the theatre wanting to order my ticket for the following nights performance and i must have held my composure to burst into tears all the way back to the hotel before breaking down in the lift. The songs had a hidden meaning for me and the story was very clever in the way it showed how someones appearance or equality can be disriminated against when judged by the magority. In the case of the Witch... the colour of her skin. All in all, i have to say that this musical truly is WICKED!

By Jeeves

By JeevesBy Jeeves is a musical based loosely on the stories of PG Wodehouse, by Andrew Lloyd-Webber (music) and Alan Ayckbourn (lyrics and story).

It opened originally (as Jeeves) on April 22nd 1975 and closed 38 performances later on May 24th. The musical was housed at Her Majesty's Theatre, which is now ironically home to one of Lloyd-Webber's most popular shows, The Phantom of the Opera. It is regarded as Andrew Lloyd-Webber's only real flop, and was completely rewritten, jettisoning most of the score and the entire original book, and re-opened on May 1 1996 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre-in-the-round in Scarborough (owned by Ayckbourn). Audience reaction was generally enthusiastic so the show moved to the fairly intimate Duke of York's Theatre in London on July 2nd for a 12 week season. The show turned out to be more popular than first thought, and the run was extended to February 1997 and the show moved to The Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. Steven Pacey played Bertie Wooster and Malcolm Sinclair played his manservant, Jeeves.

The show had its American premiere in November 1996, at the Goodpseed Opera House in Connecticut. American actor John Scherer took the part of Bertie, and Richard Kline played Jeeves. The show was specially recorded and released on VHS and DVD where British actor, Martin Jarvis, took over from Richard Kline as Jeeves. It also ran briefly at the Helen Hayes Theater in 2001.
